Eric Binford lives in the shadow of the screen, an obsessive film freak and social outsider. His life is marked by humiliation: With his invalid aunt Stella, he is kept small from a wheelchair, derided and harassed on the job as a supplier of film roles. For everyone, Eric is just a superfluous statist. Only when the light goes out and the projector is running, he becomes someone else. In his imagination he slips into the roles of his film idols, becomes hero and avenger, as a director of his own destiny.
The encounter with a Marilyn-Monroe double makes him dream of love, but the illusion shatters. With it, the line between film and reality finally blurs. Longing becomes madness. His tormentors die in cruelly staged re-enactments of classic movie scenes and every murder is a tribute.

The cinema is dark, but Eric's madness is darker. FADE TO BLACK is a popular horror gem that still enjoys cult status today among fan circles.
